Different effects in stock – get ready for editing

I was checking Youtube, and found out this one, there is one part which is useful – warp stabiliser:

We have a problem of shaky shots since the camera is so heavy and we want it to be silky smooth!

In After effects:

effect – warp stabiliser

(×) But it has a side effect of lower resolution and it depends on the clip itself whether it can work or not.

Another effect – quicksilver effect, which is useful to our pop in part:

1. split the layer (the part people moving)

2.time stretch (the lower, the better)

3.motion blur (only available in After effect CC)

4.effect control – shutter angle

Split screen tutorial – get ready for editing!

We have several shots needed to be edited into split screens, we don’t have much time left so I would like to do a research on it now rather than while i am editing!

I found an invisible split screen tutorial in accident, it is different from split screen, it is to use a tool to split two objects in one screen, and manipulate separately how long their action lasts! and I think it’s very useful:

But to be honest, I did not clearly see which tool he uses… It is not one of those basics and we need a detailed tutorial if we use it.

Compared to the invisible one, the actual split screen tutorial is much easier to follow and understand:

Basically, it is crop that makes split screen, and we can change configuration of the blocks for different looks by adjust the percentage of crop and the direction of crop:

  1. drag the videos for spilt screen

Screen Shot 2016-04-15 at 17.22.06

2. find the editing effect – transform – crop

Screen Shot 2016-04-15 at 17.19.55

3. apply the crop effect on the video

4.choose the size of cutout part and the direction

Screen Shot 2016-04-15 at 17.20.01

5. apply this to every video

6. Add black transparent video to have the same delay between the videos

New – transparent video…

Screen Shot 2016-04-16 at 20.28.49

7. adjust the position of transparent video and actual clips

Screen Shot 2016-04-16 at 20.30.10

(This part is confusing without trying on my own… I am gonna try when i get to school!)

8. (selective) another transparent video before the actual clip pops up

This one is usually seen in journey videos, very eye catchy…

Music – get ready for editing!

Because of timing, we can not film this weekend with one girl absent, I decided to choose our music instead. Both of us will select some and decide it from what we get!

Check my research

Sound Research – school drama & fantasy

Credits for three useful websites:

  1. https://incompetech.com/music/royalty-free/music.html
  2. http://www.bensound.com/royalty-free-music/2
  3. http://www.purple-planet.com

They are ROYALTY FREE MUSIC so we will not end up trapping ourselves in another copyright issue! There are some fantastic soundtrack but you have to dig out and find the good piece!

Comparing to AS level work, music is much more complicated this year since our story develops further in 5 minutes therefore music will change to work with various scenes in order to create different effects.

Stage 1(beginning: entering the school – the corridor):

bright and energetic/ rock and uplifting/

Screen Shot 2016-04-09 at 16.56.50

dark and mysterious/ calm and unnerving/

Screen Shot 2016-04-09 at 16.57.08

Stage 2 includes most of scenes and sound effects will also take a big apart to create the mysterious atmosphere, we need something subtle but unnerving, it will work well with sound effect.

Stage 3 (ending: corridor):

serenity and mellow/ gentle and quite/

Sound effects – Get ready for editing!

Okay this is much harder than soundtrack, because a lot sound effects are not free, but I found some on Youtube and they are free, those you tubers are fine to offer their products to subscribers!

Props – LOVERS’ necklaces with rings & a hat

check out How do characters dress? (Costumes)!

We’ve thought to use claddagh ring as a symbol of love but it is quite expensive in Amazon… AND the shipping fee is even higher than the product, at this moment, we need sth quick and cheap…

Screen Shot 2016-04-10 at 12.36.04Screen Shot 2016-04-10 at 12.36.29

There is a Chinese market in Zagreb, which sells cheap products from clothing to jewels. We went there and chose rings and chains for LOVERS, of course they don’t have claddagh rings but it will not harm the meaning of love as long as they are rings!

My partner suggests to buy bigger size of the rings because they are not obvious when hang on the neck, so a bigger size will give it more chance to show.

We bought another two necklaces with wings, but actually we only need chains so we get rid of the wings and put rings on it! BOYS are not likely will wear rings on their fingers, PLUS it is hard to film it on the finger even. (TAKE PUT THE WINGS PENDANT AND PUT RINGS ON IT.)

It will be fine, there are rings in medieval time and they are not fancy so it is even better, it can not go wrong with plain rings!

This is the hat from Chinese market, it only costs 1 pound!! And it is perfect for Peter who plays Madman!

Sound effects Research – school drama & fantasy

There are quite a few sound effects school drama uses but they tend to be normal live chatting:

  • Bell rings (school)

Bell rings is the convention of school drama, it signals students to enter the classroom or signals the audiences they finish their lesson, it is really important to have it since nowhere else do have bell rings, at least not in the working place.

For example, In As The Bell Rings, bell rings in every episode and the setting also follows the convention of school drama, every time bell rings, they end the conversation, just as the title indicates.

  • Back ground chatting (school)

This is not supposed to be sound effect but it is, in real filming, it is hard to keep people chatting randomly and sound effect of that comes in

  • Animal howl (fantasy)

In Lord of the Rings, when two armies meet together, the rivals make that sound like wolf or dog? That sound makes the fantasy believable:

Sound Research – school drama & fantasy

In typical school drama, the ending tends to be very happy – a new equilibrium, for example:

Don’t you forget about me (Breakfast Club)

It is not completely romance but you can feel the teenager love between them. I would image similar songs for our ending.

Built this way (Mean Girls)

Listen from 1:00, the music starts to be more and more uplifting, and the beat is strong, which is a good song for the ending, but our beat can be stronger than it.

A Dream (Freedom Writers)

This the one which is more like rap and rock? This is not quite conventional school drama song, but this one fits in Freedom Writers really well since it explores the racism. And this can be perfect for climax (disequilibrium) in school drama, since eerie does not work in the climax in school drama:

A song for Twilight

This is not the soundtrack from Twilight but this is the one we wants and it fits in the fantasy.

To find the music for our film in night parts is really hard, we can not make it like a horror but still needs to create the mysterious atmosphere, the music below is the one we want, not a big change, very subtle (it can not be too intense, otherwise it would be a horror):

Nailed down the costumes, get prepared:)

We’ve thought about it at the very beginning CHECK OUT How do characters dress? (Costumes) but we only talked about what special costumes during the night and we didn’t talk about clothes through the all short film.

This is our final plan for costumes!

We don’t bother change costumes to medieval fancy dress during the night, instead, we are gonna add some props like necklace, less is more!

And I am really careful about colour they are wearing so the position will be important CHECK OUT Students’ Sitting position?, we tend to emphasise the main characters and their costumes are based on their character, connotation of colours:)

LUCY is easy to describe, basically like Regina in Mean Girls: skirt is needed and pink as a top, makeup is popular in internet:

This is not a pretty photo BUT! we see her makeup well – baby pink eyeshadow, soft eyeliner, pink blush and soft eyebrow.

Irene as a wise friend of Emily, who suppose to dress smart and fashion, and different from Lucy for sure:

Blue or White top will indicate her rationality and wisdom even honesty.

Emily is a really passive girl so grey will connate uncertainty and passive character, we don’t intend to let her dress up, her costumes are quite plain.

When it comes to boys:

Greyson, red indicates passion, as a lover;

Don, blue indicates extroverted character and optimistic, naive, very clear;

Sean, conventional Asian students, like Emily, tend to be quite and plain, grey will also work, but for sure something does not stand out like Evan Huang in Fresh off the Boat:

We follows this style so Sean is going to wear Shirt or flannel for sure, and the colour should not be so bright, Evan Huang wears mild colour.

Editing try: Disappear effect by iMovie

Are you think it is too early to get on editing? Actually, it is just on time.

If we can’t edit the disappearing part, so what’s the point of filming it? it is part of our planning.

I do not have Adobe Primiere CC on my laptop so I use iMovie, which is a easier programme to get a hang of.

Okay, I took two videos in one position – one with the blue highlighter, one without.

I just stick this two together:

I found a tutorial of disappear effect, it is similar to mine but use only one video with everything in it and with a cross dissolved transition:

Followed the tutorial, I add a transition he suggests, it is more natural:

I think we can make it work so there is a point of filming it.

Shall we have a look at popular Web Hosts?

Over the years WordPress has evolved into a full-featured web content management system.

I was surprised that WordPress can actually make websites at first, but apparently it improved and extended the functions.

In my opinion, WordPress is one of the most robust and powerful content management systems in the world. And the reason I recommend installing a CMS for filmmakers, over building a traditional website is because once you set up WordPress, you will be able to create and modify your content and change the entire look and feel of your website, with the ease of sending an email.

Basically, it is saying WORDPRESS is great as a CMS and you can change it after set up rather than scatting a website and stays forever.

I’ve looked through three articles about making film websites, all of them mention and recommend WordPress, I think it is not only to use but also easy to assess after we build it, it is popular for professional filmmakers.

Screen Shot 2016-03-17 at 15.06.11

At last count over 23% of all websites were powered by WordPress.

Here we go, 23% shows they are one of the most dominant web hosts and it is long-established, have mature techniques.

WordPress is ready for the mobile web.

I know we can install WordPress on the phone because sometimes I upload posts while I am outside. And this can be an important function since our followers can check our websites easily!

The page is quiet formal and lack of creativity, and for me it is not easy to assess, not clear what to do. And they ask me the company and office number, and I do not have it.

Screen Shot 2016-03-17 at 14.50.20

I saw one author mentioned it and clicked on the page, it is more like classic film website, and google does not show much info. We have better choices so it might not be a good idea to use Matinee.

Similar to WordPress, and the home page is eye-catching, and it is also available on mobile device. Themes seem to be various, and my partner is really fond of this web, she is more ‘developed’ than me I think.

The reason I choose wordpress is not only because it is well-known but also its mature functions, and I tend to follow the recommendation a lot so WIX was not mentioned in the article. Anyway, it seems to be popular and creative.

Screen Shot 2016-03-17 at 14.57.53

Clearly, it is growing rapidly, even though it is new, it is attractive and competitive in the market.

And the themes are not less than what WORDPRESS offers:

Screen Shot 2016-03-17 at 15.17.09

Our blog has already based on WORDPRESS so we might go for WIX, supporting the relatively new web host and my partner seems to get on with it quite well, and I can update afterwards.
